Contributing to Assuming Gender

Call for Contributions

Assuming Gender is an electronic, international, peer-reviewed academic journal that seeks to explore the various ways in which gender is ‘assumed’ in social and cultural texts, practices, and subjectivities. To ‘assume’, in this context, may signify any or all of the following:

• ‘To adopt, choose, elect, to some position’
• ‘To take upon oneself, put on (a garb, aspect, form, or character)’
• ‘To lay claim to, appropriate, arrogate, usurp’
• ‘To take for granted as the basis of argument or action’ (OED)

Yet, these definitions are only a starting point in investigating constructions of gender. Assuming Gender will feature cutting-edge research in feminist theories, queer theories, critical and cultural theory, literature, film studies, sociology and other relevant fields. Assuming Gender is particularly interested in receiving articles that expand upon, complicate, and trouble issues of gender in the below areas of inquiry:

• Performativity
• The Body
• Medicalising Gender
• Subversions of Gender
• Transsexuality, Transgender and Intersexuality
• Gender and Philosophy
• Gender and Religion
• Gender and War
• Pornography
• Popular Culture
• Third-wave Feminism
• Post-feminism
• Post-colonialism
• Post-modernism
• Post-humanism

Proposals are welcome from any academic discipline or theoretical framework, and can cover any historical period.

We welcome contributions from academics and graduate students according to the following guidelines:

Articles and reviews for submission must represent original work and must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Material can be submitted in either print (2 copies, single sided) or electronic versions, preferably in MS-Word. Please consult the editorial board if you intend to submit in a different electronic format. Submissions must adhere to the MHRA style. If you intend to include images, please note that it is the responsibility of the author to obtain the relevant rights for reproduction. Regretfully, Assuming Gender is unable to support costs pertaining to image rights and all costs must be met by the author.

If an article (including images) is accepted for publication, the author will be responsible for arranging the purchase of any relevant rights (World, Electronic English Language). Evidence is required in the form of receipts of payment and copies of licensing agreements, sent (via email or post) to the Editorial Board, before publication can be approved.

If images are your own (i.e. photographs taken by the author), and therefore no additional rights are needed, please make this clear upon submission.

Submissions should include a full bibliography, abstract and a set of keywords to enable searching. For more information, see the Assuming Gender Style Guidelines for Contributors.

All article submissions are subject to the normal process of anonymous peer review; authors are advised to include their names and contact details on separate cover sheets attached to copies of their manuscripts. Articles should be between 5000 and 8000 words in length and should be submitted to gender@cf.ac.uk or by post to

Book Reviews:

Communications regarding reviews should be addressed to The Reviews Editor at gender@cf.ac.uk. Reviews should normally be between 1000 and 2000 words long.

Proofs will be sent to authors if the production cycle of the journal allows sufficient time; in the first instance, these will be in the form of electronic PDF files. They should be corrected and returned to the Editor within one week. Only minor alterations to the text will be accepted.
